Worked example

Worked example: a Wrexham pub half a mile from the Racecourse, and the one page it did not have

A worked example, labelled as one: we do not yet have a Wrexham hospitality client to publish. The pub is a composite of the hospitality sites we have audited for the hospitality page on this site; the plan is what we would do; the stadium figure is the published one and the results are expectations, marked as such.

The starting point: a pub ten minutes' walk from the ground, busy on home days by word of mouth, a Facebook page updated most weeks, a website with a menu from 2019, and a Google profile that shows “hours might differ” every Saturday because nobody has confirmed them.

The page

Match days at the pub, one URL, rewritten each June

  1. 1

    The heading says the ground

“Match days: open from 11, ten minutes' walk to the Racecourse, away fans welcome.” The search is the ground and the day; the heading answers both.

  2. 2

    The fixture dates, kept current

The season's home games listed and updated, linked to the club's own fixture list rather than copied from it. The page lives on the same URL every season so it gathers history.

  3. 3

    What is true that day

Opening time, the kitchen's hours, whether the big screen is on, card only, the table limit, and where to go if it is full. Honest beats welcoming.

  4. 4

    The walk and the parking

Ten minutes, the route in two sentences, where a car can be left and where it cannot, and the taxi number for after.

  5. 5

    Last season, quoted

Two reviews from away fans that name the club they came with, with permission for the names. That sentence is what the next away fan searches.

  6. 6

Live by the end of June

When the fixture list is published and fans book trains and rooms. A page published on the Friday of a game is seen by nobody until the next one.

The profile on a home Saturday

Three settings and the habit

Special hours confirmed for every home Saturday, even when they match the normal ones, because an unconfirmed Saturday shows “hours might differ” on the map and a fan with ninety minutes to fill goes to the pub that confirmed. The food and parking attributes set. A post each home week with the fixture and the opening time. And the habit: ask the away fans who were looked after for the review, on the day, because “we came up with Stoke and they could not have been better” is the sentence the next away fan types.

None of it is a technique. It is the profile saying what the pub is doing that Saturday, in the place the map and the assistants read.

What we would expect, labelled as expectation

First for a search that exists for a few days at a time

Match-day searches are the one case where a small Wrexham site can be first within weeks, because the search exists for a few days at a time and the national sites do not compete for it. We would expect the page to show for “pubs near the Racecourse” and “where to drink before Wrexham” in Search Console within a month of publishing, to be the pub the assistants name when a visiting fan asks, and to be judged by one number: a home Saturday's takings against the same fixture last season. If the page shows and the till does not move, the page is being found and not chosen, and the fix is the hours or the welcome, not the SEO.

How to read this page

  • The pub is a composite; no Wrexham pub is named, described or implied.
  • The capacity is the ground's published figure; everything about results is an expectation, labelled as such.
  • The measure is the till on a home Saturday against the same fixture last season, which the pub already has.
